Once we become adults, the prospect of making friends becomes much more difficult and it leads many of us to give up on the idea completely. These problems are only exasperated when we get old and for elderly citizens who cannot make friends on their own, things can get rather hopeless.
That’s what makes this story such a heart breaker and a tearjerker. Combating the isolation is not always easy and when old people are looking to be brought into the fold, they are usually forced to reach out the world around them on their own and try their best to shatter the walls that keep them confined from the rest of us.
Marleen Brooks came home one day and she had received an unbelievable note from one of her neighbors. It came from a 90 year old woman who lived down the street from her, as she wanted to know if Marleen was willing to be her friend, since she had become very lonely and had no one to spend time with.
The note read:
“Would you consider to become my friend.
I’m 90 years old- live alone.
All my friends have passed away.
I’m so lonesome and scared.
Please I pray for someone.”
Brooks decided that she could use a new friend too and from there, the two have become great pals. She baked some cupcakes for her new buddy and even described the experience for all of her friends and family members in a post on her Facebook page.
Brooks wrote a caption of her own which the local news anchor shared as well:
“Came home to this note from a lady that lives down the street from me. Makes my heart sad, but on the bright side it looks like I will be getting a new friend.”
Brooks did exactly that. She went over to her elderly neighbor’s house in the evening to introduce herself with cupcakes in hand. She wrote to Somerville after the two met and described how it went (which he updated on his Facebook page).
“She’s such a sweet lady! And she was over the moon when we came over,” Brooks said. She then reported what the 90-year-old woman, Wanda, said during their visit.
“I hope you didn’t think I was stupid for writing you, but I had to do something. Thank you so much for coming over. I’ve lived here for 50 years and don’t know any of my neighbors.”
Can you believe that this woman managed to live in the same neighborhood for over 50 years without knowing anything about the people who she was sharing the space with?
According to Brooks, Wanda told her she has three sons and one of them died last year of cancer. Another one lives near her and the other lives far away. Wanda is on oxygen and divulged to her new friend that she has congestive heart failure, osteoporosis, and other ailments.
This story should definitely inspire all of us to take the time to get to know our neighbors on a closer level. The following video is a must see and when you find yourself feeling as if you need someone to talk to, be sure to follow the lead of this elderly woman, so that you can also make a brand new friend like Marleen as soon as possible!
