Dog Food Recall Expanded By The FDA With More Brands Being Labeled ‘Toxic’

Three different brands of dog food were recalled last month. They included Nature’s Place, Nature’s Promise and Abound. All of them had issues associated with the Chicken and Brown Rice recipes.

The brands that were recalled last month were found to have high levels of vitamin D, which may prove to be toxic to dogs.

The recall has once again expanded and additional dry food kibbles were found to have high vitamin D levels. This is the same issue from the recall last month.

The FDA has issued an update with the new list of dog foods that are potentially toxic to dogs:

Additional investigation is underway by the FDA to try and track down the source leading to the contamination. In the meantime, pet owners are being warned to keep a close eye on the health of their dog if they have already consumed any of the food on the list.

“FDA scientists have evaluated samples of some of these products, and State and private lab test results indicate that the food contained as much as approximately 70 times the intended amount of vitamin D. Consuming food with such high levels of vitamin D is potentially toxic to dogs and in severe cases may lead to kidney failure and/or death.”

Elevated vitamin D levels may lead to the following symptoms:

Loss of appetite
Increased thirst
Vomiting
Excessive urination
Increased drooling
Weight loss

If you recognize any of these behaviors in your dog, seek veterinary assistance immediately. “If your pet is having symptoms of vitamin D toxicity, contact a veterinarian immediately,” the FDA says. “Provide a full diet history to your veterinarian. You may find it helpful to take a picture of the pet food label, including the lot number.”
