Fans Aren’t Happy With How Different Scar Looks In The New ‘Lion King’ Trailer

Dumbo is out, and has already made me cry as I reminisced my childhood in a theatre full of kids. So that means that now there’s only 100 days left until the next Disney release. “The Lion King” is due out July 19, 2019. The remake will feature the voice talents of Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Billy Eichner, John Kani, John Oliver, Beyoncé, and James Earl Jones – I was so thankful James Earl Jones would be making another brilliant appearance as Mufasa.

In a preview Wednesday morning, Disney released a new trailer which gives us a look at the characters, like Scar and his hyenas, and the beloved duo Timon and Pumbaa.

But not everyone was too happy with what was showed in the trailer’s release. Scar in particular, who will be voiced by Chiwetel Ejiofor, was the subject of particular hate on social media for his over all look. Many voiced their unhappiness with how plain he looks now compared to his original counterpart.

“Scar’s colouration is completely off,” one Twitter user posted. “I didn’t realise that was him until I saw Shenzi, Benzai & Ed next to him. I wish Jeremy [Irons] voiced him but I will eventually get used to this voice actor in the film.”

However, not everyone was so disappointed. There were some who were more open to the character design of Scar.

“Scar looking like the mangy lion he is supposed to be,” commented another user. “Can’t rise to the top as a lion. So leads a pack of hyenas.”

“I’m all for The ‘Lion King’ remake,” another added. “Mostly because of Donald Glover. But these two pictures highlight how having live action cartoon characters restricts the portrayal of emotion, I mean just look at the picture of scar in the original photo compared to the new one.”

One commenter even argued that Scar is supposed to look more like an outcast lion rather than a straight-up evil villain.

“Where I think people are getting confused at is they wanted Scar to be identical to the animated one,” they said. “Although I prefer the neon green eyes, Scar is suppose to look like an outcast.”

One user added, “Just compare the designs here. OG Scar: evil and pompous as hell. Remake Scar: a ratty looking lion I guess. Much like most CGI-driven films, this movie is gonna age like milk while the original remains a sight to behold.”

So where do you fall on the Scar debate?
