According to a report from WRDW, a couple, who had been married for 71 years died just 12 hours apart on the same day.
Herbert DeLaigle, 94, and Marilyn Frances DeLaigle, 88 died at a hospital in Waynesboro. They were from Georgia and were married in 1948.
Herbert died first at 2:20 am and then Marilyn Frances died 12 hours later.
They were in a Waynesboro cafe when they met in 1947. Marilyn was working at the cafe when they met.
“Frances worked at a little cafe we had in Waynesboro named White Way Cafe,” Herbert DeLaigle said in a 2018 interview with WRDW. “I kept seeing her going in and out, in and out and I had my eyes set on her. And then I finally got up the nerve to ask her if she would go out with me sometime.”
Their first date was to watch a movie. One year later, Herbert asked her to be his wife.
“I asked her will she have me as her husband and she said, of course,” Herbert recalled.
Things didn’t go perfectly, however. The wedding almost didn’t happen.
“He was always late,” Marilyn said. Herbert admitted that he was an hour late and the preacher almost didn’t perform the ceremony. He was able to persuade him and the marriage ceremony continued.
They were in Germany for 6 years during WWII. Herbert was serving in the army at the time.
He stayed with the army for 22 years, eventually serving in Korea and Vietnam before leaving the service.
Herbert and Marilyn have six children, 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held on Monday.
