There’s nothing quite like having a nice glass of wine with your dinner meal but some people like to indulge at bedtime as well. In fact, you may even want to consider switching to a bedtime drink if you are trying to lose weight.
According to a study by the Washington State University, a glass of wine at bedtime may help you to shed some pounds. The study was from 2015 and it involves a chemical in wine called resveratrol.
Resveratrol is a compound in red wine that has the benefit of turning white fat cells into beige fat cells. Why does that matter?
Beige fat cells are easier to burn compared to white fat cells. Mice who were given resveratrol in the study gained less weight than those who weren’t given resveratrol. They were both fed the same, fattening diet.
“In the study, mice were fed a high-fat diet. Those receiving resveratrol in amounts equivalent to 12 ounces of fruit per day for humans gained about 40 percent less weight than control mice,” the study found.
Woman’s Day magazine reported on a separate study from 2012. It found that drinking a late-night glass of wine could keep you from snacking too much at night.
Avoiding those late-night snacks can also help you lose weight. That study did not involve humans, they used bees.
So far we have talked about the good news for those who want to lose weight but you might want to hold back before you start guzzling at bedtime.
According to some experts, drinking wine before going to sleep can disrupt your sleep patterns.
“Initially you might feel sleepy and fall asleep easily. But you end up awakening more often in the middle of the night and the alcohol has a disruptive effect on sleep,” Timothy Roehrs, director of research at the Sleep Disorders and Research Center of Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital, said
If you only have one glass of wine, however, you may be okay. Sleep only tends to be disrupted when you have a blood alcohol level above 0.04. That would typically require more than one drink.
Men would have to drink two glasses of wine in order to disrupt their sleep and women, about 1 1/2.
If you drink too much wine before bed it could result in daytime drowsiness, irritability and headaches. In other words, a hangover.
If you overindulge at bedtime, eat something to reduce your blood alcohol content. Otherwise, a moderate amount of wine before going to sleep can help you fall asleep faster and may help you shed some weight.
