There have been a number of recalls on blood pressure medications and many people thought that they might be ending with the new year. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case.

Dozens of generic blood pressure tablets have been recalled since July because of impurities. It is happening again at the end of the year as another manufacturer launches a voluntary recall.

Here’s the common connection between all of the recalls for this year.

All of the affected tablets feature the ingredient valsartan, or the ingredients losartan and irbesartan.

All of the recalled medicines are at risk of being tainted with the chemical byproducts NDEA and NDMA, which are thought to increase a patient’s cancer risk.

Most of the affected tablets were made by one of two producers: China’s Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceuticals, or another producer in India that uses a similar manufacturing process.

Health experts were predicting that the recalls were going to be ending earlier this month, but that is not the case. As it turns out, some pills are being recalled that were on the market as recently as this month. That is why it is important to continue to check your medication.

Torrent Pharmaceuticals is behind the latest recall. They are pulling two lots of their Losartan potassium tablets (100mg) from shelves.

The FDA said in an announcement that the tablets contained trace amounts of NDEA. That is considered to be a ‘probable human carcinogen’.

The FDA continues to warn people that they should take the recalled HBP medication but that their doctor or pharmacist should be contacted for a replacement.
