Dog Food Recall Expands As More Dog Food Brands Have Potential Health Risks

In case you haven’t noticed, there have been multiple recalls in the past few months and it is difficult to keep up with all of them.

It seems like a new recall pops up on the radar every day and there is something in our cupboard or refrigerator that needs tossed to the curb. Some of the items included recently are cereals, vegetables and now, even pet foods.

Sunshine Mills has issued a recall for the following products.

Abound Chicken and Brown Rice Recipe in the 4lb, 14lb and 24lb packages (UPCS – 83556, 83573, 89076 respectively)

Nature’s Place Real Country Chicken and Brown Rice in the 5lb and 15lb bags (UPCS 72543998959 and 72543998960)

Nature’s Promise Chicken and Brown Rice in the 4lb, 14lb, and 28lb bags (Best before dates of November 1st – November 8th)

The food was shown to have elevated levels of vitamin D, which is why the recall was issued. You might think that extra vitamins would be beneficial for your four-legged friend, but it can be toxic and very dangerous for dogs.

Know the Symptoms of Elevated Vitamin D Levels:

You might notice some of the following symptoms if your dog has elevated levels of vitamin D:

Loss of appetite
Increased thirst
Vomiting
Excessive urination
Increased drooling
Weight loss

The symptoms tend to show up first and they should not be ignored. If treatment doesn’t occur promptly for high levels of vitamin D, more serious issues could occur. This includes renal dysfunction.

Renal dysfunction, otherwise known as kidney failure can include the following symptoms:

Vomiting
Lethargy
Diarrhea
Constipation
Depression
Weight Loss
Increased Thirst
Lack of Appetite
Acute Blindness
Seizures and Comas
Blood in the Urine
Increased Frequency Urine of Urination

If any of these symptoms are seen in your pets, you should take them to the veterinarian right away.

If you have any of the listed dog foods in your home, take them back to the store and you will be given a full refund. You can also contact the company directly:
