Mimi is the type of dog that everyone dreams of getting the chance to own. She is fun to hang out with, loyal and loves to play. She has been staying at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter and is receiving rave reviews. This pitbull should already have an awesome home. So what is the deal? In a unique twist of fate, the pitbull is actually deathly afraid of humans.
This typically works in reverse. Many humans find themselves afraid of pitbulls and this keeps them from making an adoption. Mimi, on the other hand, has yet to leave the shelter because she is so fearful. Her wariness probably has a lot to do with her past experiences. She was surrendered initially for a “behavior issue” that had to do with her fear, in all likelihood.
She is not good at making first impressions either. This contributes to her inability to find a home. Those who have spent time with her at the shelter believe that her problems could be fixed if her new owners were willing to spend some time with her. No dog should ever have to go without a home and Mimi is no exception. Her fear should not be a deal breaker.
The shelter workers also say that Mimi is a very loving dog to all of them. This just means that they have taken the time to get to know her. They are not worried about her long term prognosis. They just want someone who will understand her needs. While she loves to play, Mimi also needs a sizable amount of rest and relaxation to function at her best.
She is an older dog who does not need a lot of playtime. She’s more of a chill sort. Mimi has been at this shelter for too long and her situation breaks the heart of everyone who knows her best. A local adopter is needed. She will need to meet the person several times in order to develop a bond with them and this disqualifies those who live far away.
Once she is given the chance to get to know people, she is a happy and friendly dog. Getting over that hump can be difficult and that is why you need to share this story right away. Mimi’s next owner is out there somewhere. Let’s all do our part to help her find them by sharing this story with a much wider audience.
