In season eight, episode five of Game of Thrones, a number of characters met their end, including some who have been around since the first season. Varys was the first to go when executed by Daenerys for attempting to talk Jon Snow into taking the crown from the mad queen. Something that seems to have been missed by many fans, however, is the fact that Daenerys almost met their end with an attempted poisoning by Varys.
Although it escaped the notice of many fans, there were some who caught it in the conversation with a kitchen girl named Martha. It seems as if the conversation was more sinister than what it appeared on the surface. Here’s what happened.
Varys: “Nothing?”
Girl: “She won’t eat.”
Varys: “We’ll try again at supper.”
Girl: “I think they’re watching me.”
Varys: “Who?”
Girl: “Her soldiers.”
Varys: “Of course they are. That’s their job. What have I told you, Martha?”
Girl: “The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward.”
Varys: “Go on. They’ll be missing you in the kitchen.”
Many people feel that she was nervous because Dany’s food may have been poisoned by Varys. It may also be that she wasn’t eating because she knew of the possibility of poison. It could explain why there was the assumption of betrayal and why soldiers were watching the kitchen girl.
Varys was rumored to be involved in the death of Jon Arryn and is known to be a user of poison. Since then, it was revealed that Little Finger was responsible for the death but Varys did use poison wine in an attempt to kill Daenerys.
We have now established that Varys is in favor of using poison and that may be behind some of the fans being convinced that Dany was going to be the next victim.
Varys was kidnapped by a sorcerer and mutilated so his body parts could be used in magic rituals. Since that time, Varys has been a fighter on the side of the ‘innocents’ of Westeros.
In addition, Varys saw the Mad Queen had the power and thought that Jon would be a better king. Jon did give up the title of King in the North in order to protect Westeros from the Night King.
Daenerys executed Varys and then went on to use Dragon fire to kill the population of King’s Landing.
ICYMI, Varys totally tried to poison Dany at the beginning of the episode. The callbacks to season 1 are amazing:

Ned: Poison is a woman's weapon.
Pycelle: Yes. Women, cravens… and eunuchs.
Grand Maester Pycelle then mentioned Lord Varys just seconds later! ????#GameofThrones pic.twitter.com/TVbL2uVmdJ
