Like many of us, Carolyn Kirk has an intense love for animals. From the time she was a young girl, she spent her spare time at the Stray Rescue of St. Louis, volunteering to help those lost animals. Those days also have a very special piece of her heart as well. It was during that time that met a man named Cameron on an Internet dating website. It didn’t take long before they were in love and their love of animals helped their relationship to grow.
Carolyn had some very specific values and she wanted to share as much as she could with the SPCA. In order to put as much toward the cause as she could, she decided to forgo the fancy wedding and get married in a simpler location. When she first starting talking about it, it was more of a joke but soon, this young couple knew it was the right thing to do.
They said their vows on May 24, 2018, at the Nevada SPCA, a no-kill sanctuary for animals. They stood together inside one of the play yards to say ‘I do’.
This was really appropriate because they both volunteer at an animal shelter. They had built their own altar for the wedding and had a 10-year-old lab (Babaloo) bring in the rings. Homeless dogs filled the seats. It allowed the human guests to see them in a different light.
What is perhaps the most interesting part of the wedding is the fact that they didn’t spend a dime. They were able to funnel all of their savings to the shelter.
Some people might say that what this couple did was extreme. Was it really any more extreme than spending tens of thousands of dollars on a fancy wedding that is here today and gone tomorrow? Sure, we all have memories from that special day but they have more than a memory, they have something to hold onto and a good feeling in their heart from what they were able to do.
