Doctors live a stressful life most of us have no idea. It’s not everyday that we are making decisions that literally save peoples lives.
Not all medical professionals are experts in “bed side manners’ as others. Some further training in sympathy and compassion could prove to make the difference between being a good doctor or being a “great’ doctor.
Samuel Bardwell, was a newly-enrolled student at West Valley College in Saratoga when he was rushed to El Camino Hospital. He was suffering from a severe anxiety attack. The 20 year old had passed out following the school’s first summer basketball workout.
However, the doctor on duty, Dr. Beth Keegstra, was treating him as if he was faking the serious illness.
In the video, Dr Keggstra orders the 20-year-old
“Sit up, sit up, sit up! I’m having you sit up! I’m sorry, sir, you were the least sick of all the people who are here, who are dying. There, so you picked your head up. Now don’t try to tell me you can’t move. C’mon, sit up.”
Then when Samuel tells the doctor he can’t inhale the “professional” mocks him saying “He can’t inhale! Wow! He must be dead. Are you dead, sir? I don’t understand, you are breathing just fine.”
After a few minutes the tension reaches a it’s peak with Keegstra accusing Samuel of changing his story about his symptoms saying he is “full of s***!”, adding “you have changed your story every f***ing time”.
Samuel’s father, Donald Bardwell, posted in a separate post about his son’s history of anxiety attacks and how he takes Klonopin, a sedative that treats panic disorder. He further explains Samuel had stopped taking his meds several days before he visited the ER. His prescription had run out and he didn’t have time to refill it.
Now that the video went viral, El Camino Hospital CEO Dan Woods had this to say:
“This week, a patient who visited the emergency department at our Los Gatos campus had an interaction with a physician whose demeanor was unprofessional and not the standard we require of all who provide care through El Camino Hospital. We have expressed our sincere apologies and are working directly with the patient on this matter. Please know that we take this matter very seriously and the contracted physician involved has been removed from the work schedule, pending further investigation.”
Hopefully, the Doc took this as a sign she needed to brush up on her bed side manner and hopefully come back a better doctor then in this situation.
This is how they treat black people in Los Gatos emergency room. SMH Everyone share this video. For the record this is my son.
