Grocery Stores Are Now ‘Protecting’ Ice Cream From Lickers

Millions of people have been horrified following the string of viral “ice cream licking” videos, which has lead to several stores taking drastic measures as precautions.

A teen was depicted licking a container of Blue Bell ice cream inside a Walmart store near San Antonio, Texas, before police identified and located her. Then after that, a Louisiana man was taken into custody after he did the same to a tub of Blue Bell.

According to Mashable, several social media photos taken around the United States have cited some stores as taking extra precautions to prevent other possible pranksters from being able to tamper with ice cream.

Some of those measures are including putting out displayed warning signs, hiring security, putting locks on freezer doors and installing call buttons to alert employees.

Another picture with a vulgar comment showed a lock around the freezer door along with a sign that said, “Please see an employee for help.”

Blue Bell is considering change as just earlier this month, the company said that it’s looking into placing more protection on their ice cream, including plastic wrappers.

A Blue Bell representative who spoke with the Houston Chronicle, said, “We are always looking for ways to improve, including looking at methods within our manufacturing process to add additional protection to the carton.”

According to the Chronicle, Blue Bell’s website has explained their previous sealing method, saying that their half-gallon containers are flipped upside down before being sent to be frozen in the hardening room – a method which results in a naturally sealed ice cream top.

The man who filmed a video of himself licking a Blue Bell tub of ice cream before placing it back with the other ice creams has broken his silence following the now-viral video.

Lenise Martin III told WVLA that the whole thing was a joke and it led to a misunderstanding.

“It was a joke with no criminal intent or activity … but I was locked up with murderers and real criminals on maxim security,” Martin said in a new outlet interview, where he was shown smiling and holding ice cream.

The local news report didn’t have any further details to share about the incident, however, based off his statement – as well as the station’s photo of him – it looks like he made bail and was able to get out of jail following his arrest.

Martin, who has been described by the police as a “copycat,” got arrested by the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office on the 6th of July, reported WAFB.

According to the report, investigators claim that management asked Martin to return to the store after they became aware of the video clip.

The teen from San Antonio has been identified according to police in East Texas. The teen suspect was seen grabbing a Blue Bell container of ice cream, licking it, and putting the lid back on before placing it back on the shelf of the Walmart.

An off-camera voice can be heard saying, “You foul,” in the video clip.

Since the incident, the video has gone viral, attracting the horrified attention of many people on social media.

CBS News is reporting that detectives have spoken with the suspect.

Food-tampering is a felony, so hopefully, any other potential ice-cream lickers realize that and decide to forgo any “pranks” because honestly – it’s downright disgusting.

What do you think? Have you seen any of the viral video clips going around?
