Around the world, bath bombs have been gaining a lot of popularity in recent years – and for good reason. They smell great, come in a variety of fun colors, and they make great gifts. They also do wonders to soften and moisturize the skin.
If you don’t know the exact science behind them, bath bombs are basically compressed bath powders made into the shape of a ball. The ingredients are usually a mix of baking soda, citric acid, and essential oils, and when dropped into water, they’ll fizz and bubble – releasing all the wonderful scents and colors into the water.
You’ve probably witnessed the beauty of dissolving bath bombs – either in person or on Instagram, where they’ve become quite popular. They’ve even gained their own hashtag. If you search for #bathart you’re sure to find thousands of bath bomb photos and videos to scroll through.
“This dissolving process has left the most reserved of adults enthralled, prompting them to take pictures of their bath bomb water and share them on social media,” says Urban Agenda Magazine.
For example, a popular bath bomb from Lush Cosmetics called “Twilight” mimics the evening sky by going from pink, to purple, to a deep violet color.
Pretty, right?
Lush Cosmetics seems to be the leader in the bath bomb movement. The co-founder of Lush, Mo Constantine, says the bath bomb grew out of the inspiration coming from the fizzing of Alka Seltzer.
Normally, baking soda wouldn’t be bad for your skin because of the high pH levels. However, because the bath bombs are combined with citric acid and water, the pH levels are lowered as a whole.
It wasn’t long ago that some people decided they wanted to make a bath bomb that no one has seem before – they wanted to make the biggest bath bomb ever.
The people at Mama Pearson’s Soaporium decided that they were going to make the biggest bath bomb ever, and they wanted to get into the Guinness Book of World Records.
As there was no previous record to beat, the Guinness Book of World Records contacted Mama Pearson’s to tell them that in order to receive a certificate from them, that they’d have to make their bath bomb a 45-pound one. Not only did Mama Pearson’s agree, but they also made it much bigger than what was expected of them.
On June 9, 2018, Mama Pearson’s Soaporium set a world record when they made a bath bomb that weighed in at an incredible 198.64 pounds!
It didn’t take long for the bath bomb to serve as inspiration for others to try and create their own world record-breaking bath bombs.
A short week later, a 2,000-pound bath bomb was created by Vat19 and it blew Mama Pearson’s record away.
So how did Vat19 manage to make such a monstrosity? They used 31 fifty-pound bags of corn starch, citric acid, baking soda, and black dye. In a time-consuming process, Vat19 mixed all of the ingredients and then set it to mold in their own DIY mold made out of epoxy and fiberglass.
“To make our large mold, we’re going back to our old friend fiberglass,” a Vat19 crew member explained. “We’re going to make two halves that come apart and hopefully reveal a giant bath bomb.”
Naturally, a bath bomb so large gave off a spectacular explosion. The video of the bath bomb has been viewed more than 24 million times.
