In Sydney, Australia, there’s a familiar sight for pedestrians and commuters alike. Chris and his pet rat named Lucy, live on the streets, and the pair are well known to the city, being cited as both incredibly sweet and friendly. It is clear to anyone who passes them, that the pair share a deep and meaningful bond.
“Almost every day since I started my job in the city Chris and his pet rat Lucy have sat in the same spot, Chris chatting to passersby and Lucy happily munching, sleeping and looking on. They are a feature of Sydney city life and I have always smiled when I see them and felt glad they had each other,” Alyson Pearce, who started a GoFundMe page for the two, wrote.
Everyone assumed that they would always see the pair together, until one day Chris was spotted without his precious Lucy.
Apparently, on the 6th of April, when Chris went to the bathroom, a woman approached his belongings and scooped up Lucy, taking her away. Naturally, Chris was beside himself when he came back to find Lucy missing, and immediately reported her disappearance to the police, who jumped on the search for Lucy.
The people who saw and interacted with Chris and Lucy everyday, immediately noticed her absence and asked after her. When Chris told them the situation, everyone was hoping the police would be able to track down Lucy and reunite the two. Chris even constructed a special sign that read, “My pet rat Lucy was stolen on Saturday. Lucy is black and white with a bit of brown.”
There was finally some good news about a week and a half later, when officers were able to bring Chris into the station in order to reunite him with his beloved pet.
As it turns out, the whole thing was just a giant misunderstanding. The woman who had initially taken her, has spotted her all alone and assumed that she was abandoned, so she took her home in order to care for her. It was a relief to know that no one actually had ill-intent towards Chris or Lucy.
The police officers brought Lucy to Chris inside a box, and as soon as she saw him, she scurried up the side in an effort to reach him. Chris gently picked her up and inspected her to verify that she was truly Lucy. She was, and he was overwhelmed by joy.
“That’s her. Yep, she remembers me!” Chris said.
After plenty of cuddles and kisses with Lucy, Chris thanked the police, as well as apologized to them for any trouble they may have gone through in their search for Lucy. Naturally, the officers were happy to help, and even happier that the story had a happy ending and Chris and Lucy were reunited.
After the thank yous and goodbyes, the officers kindly gave Chris and Lucy a ride in their police car. There’s no doubt that Sydney is happy to see the pair together again. A GoFundMe was set up for the pair, so that Chris will be able to give Lucy the best care.
