We all have difficult years and for a five-year-old named Slade Thompson, this year has been ‘one of those years’. He has had his second surgery of 2019 in the UPMC Susquehanna Hospital in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
This time, he was back to have his tonsils removed.
Layla, his mother was in the waiting room during the procedure. She wanted to make sure that he felt safe and was not alone. As she anxiously waited in the room for news, she could hardly wait to go back and be by his bed.

Before Layla was allowed to go back to see her son after he woke up from surgery, the nurses were checking his vitals. One of those nurses, Annie Hager, RN let Slade know that his mother would be there but it wasn’t quite time yet.
He then asked the nurse for a favor.
Layla was finally allowed to go back into Slade in his hospital room and she knew she had to take a picture of what she saw. She then shared the image on Facebook and it went viral for all the right reasons.
“As a nurse, providing care is one thing, but making sure our patients are calm and comfortable matters just as much,” the staff at UPMC wrote on Facebook. “It’s nurses like Annie — who show true compassion — that keep our patients happy.”
