We’ve heard a lot about bees in the news lately. They are an important part of our ecosystem, helping to pollinate plants so that they continue to grow. Thanks to pesticides and changes in the climate, however, they are disappearing quickly.
That is where the “beeza” comes in. They are tiny pizza pies about 1 inch in diameter that are made by Papa John’s. The tiny pizzas for bees include a passata base but are topped with a variety of wildflowers, including the Forget Me Nots, Rose Geraniums, pollen, rosemary and thyme. It is to help sustain them through a difficult time.
Papa John’s and Thom Whitchurch of Britain got together to create the miniature product. It isn’t something which you can purchase but the pizza chain is just doing their part to make sure that bees are here for future generations.
Wildflower seeds are also being given out by Papa John’s on social media so you can do your part to help. Between July 15 and September 1, customers will be able to make a donation to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust using the change from their pizza orders.
You can also try a Bee Sting pizza from Papa John’s that was just recently launched. The unique pizza has an Amarillo chili base with pepperoni, mozzarella, honey and green chili on top.
If it weren’t for the hard work of bees, pizza wouldn’t exist. Darryl Cox, Senior Science and Policy Officer of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust said:
“It may seem hard to believe, but without bumblebees, there would be no pizza. Tomato plants hold their pollen in extremely tight structures and literally need a bumblebee to buzz the pollen out to fertilize the flowers. This free-bee service means we can produce enough tomatoes to satisfy the global demand for pizza and other tomato-based products.”
Giles Codd, UK Marketing Director for Papa John’s agreed that we should be doing more to support the bees, saying:
“Bees are fundamental to the making of pizzas, so we wanted to give them a slice of the action and create one perfect for them whilst raising awareness of the well-publicized issue of declining bee populations both here in the UK and across the globe. We hope the new Bee Sting pizza, goes down as well with our customers as the ‘Beezza’ did with the bees.”
With the help of Papa John’s, we may just have bees around for many years to come.
