We’ve all seen that show “I Didn’t Know I was Pregnant”. Hardly do we ever think it’ll happen to us, but sometimes it does. And that’s exactly what happened to eighteen-year-old Ebony Steveson, who went to bed with a headache and then had to be placed in an induced coma for four days, only to wake up to motherhood.

Ebony was completely unaware she was pregnant, never once experiencing morning sickness or missed periods. The college student didn’t even have a bump. She went to bed feeling unwell on the 2nd of December 2018, but when her health worsened drastically, she was rushed to the hospital where medical staff induced a coma. She woke up four days later on the 6th of December, shocked by the news that she had a daughter.

What Ebony also didn’t know was that she has a rare condition called uterus didelphys, which means she was born with two uteruses, meaning that she was able to continue having normal periods, making impossible for her to know she was pregnant.

After she began experiencing seizures, she was rushed to Royal Oldham Hosptial where tests confirmed that she was pregnant and suffering from a condition called preeclampsia.

While under her induced coma, doctors performed an emergency C-section on December 3, 2018, which resulted in the birth of a little girl who weighed in at 7lbs 10oz.

After the initial shock of waking up to motherhood wore off, she began bonding with her little girl, who she named Elodie.

“I didn’t think I even wanted kids,” Ebony said. “At least not for another 10 years and never expected to be a young mum. Waking up from a coma to be told I had been pregnant and had given birth to a baby girl was overwhelming to say the least.

She added, “Meeting my baby was so surreal. It felt like an out of body experience. I worried I wouldn’t bond with my daughter because I had no time to get my head around her arrival, but I think she’s amazing. It’s an absolute miracle. I wouldn’t change Elodie for the world.”

Ebony says she can’t remember anything past going to bed, then waking up four days later, so her mother Sheree, 39, was on stand-by to fill in the blanks for her.

“At around 10pm that night I heard Ebony shout down to me that her headache had gotten really bad. She started being sick, so I rushed her into the bathroom and before I knew it she was having a seizure on the bathroom floor,” Sheree said. “I rang 999 immediately as she’d never had anything like this before.”

As they waited for the paramedics, Ebony suffered five more seizures in the span of five minutes. When the paramedics arrived they asked if Ebony could be pregnant, to which Sheree responded “no”.

“Despite me insisting she couldn’t be pregnant, the paramedics were certain she was, and to my shock a bump had appeared at her stomach,” Sheree explained.

“They think the ferocity of the seizures could have caused the baby to move, making it suddenly visible,” Sheree added.

“When I woke up I remember the nurses telling me I had a baby, and before I knew it they’d put her on my chest. It sounds awful now, but I asked them to take her away as I was so confused and sure they’d made a mistake,” Ebony recounts the moment she woke up from her coma and was told she was a mother.”

“But my mum explained it all to me while the nurses were there, and they gave my little girl back to me to hold properly for the first time. Although I was so confused – and pretty scared – it was a beautiful moment and she was so quiet,” Ebony added.

Ebony plans to go back to college. Her mother Sheree will be helping her to take care of the new family addition.

“Although I had no time to prepare, I wouldn’t change what’s happened for the world,” Ebony said. “I’m so excited to wake up and see her every morning, and to get to spend another day with my precious little miracle.”
