Stories like these are bound to be divisive. To be quite honest, we are not even sure as to how we feel about it. A dog that was otherwise healthy was recently put down and you won’t believe the reason why. Their owner was not looking to head into the afterlife alone. Their final request was that they be buried with their dog and it was fulfilled.
We do not know what to make of this. On the one hand, there is something sweet about it. On the other hand, did anyone ask the dog if that’s what they wanted? All jokes aside, we would rather see our beloved pooches living on in our absence. The idea of putting an otherwise healthy dog to sleep seems somewhat selfish and it is most definitely a shortsighted act.
Chesterfield County Animal Services describes Emma as a well mannered dog who was loved by everyone. She was a Shih Tzu mix. Thanks to a stipulation in her owner’s will, she is now resting in peace alongside of her. Chesterfield Animal Services manager Carrie Jones says that the facility begged the woman’s estate to please reconsider this incredibly bizarre request.

In Jones’ words, this was a dog that they “could easily find a home for and re-home” but this did not matter to the estate one bit. The woman’s dying wishes were to be respected, whether they made any sense or not. There are also those who are wondering if this act is even legal. How can someone have a healthy pet killed just to meet someone’s strange request?
Although I understand the “no one will take care of my dog better than me”, I think that’s selfish.

This woman resided in Virginia and the laws are pretty clear in this regard. Animal remains are not supposed to be placed in the casket next to human remains. As you may have imagined, social media was not happy to hear about what has taken place. They are calling the woman’s actions selfless and we are inclined to agree, for the most part.

While there is certainly something to be said for believing that no one can take care of your dog as well as you can, this is not behavior that anyone should be co-signing. These sorts of heartless and inhumane behaviors should not be tolerated. Let’s hope that this is the last story of its kind. Lawmakers need to step in to make sure that this sort of thing does not ever have the chance to happen again!
