An emotional reunion caught on video has the internet buzzing with hopes of second chances.
Duffy, an Irish Terrier started losing his eyesight when he was 8 years old, it happened suddenly and in 3-5 months he was totally blind.
“Within about 3-5 months he went from a totally normal 8 year old dog to a dog who was completely blind,” Duffy’s caretaker, Benjamin Man said.
“It broke my heart seeing this dog I grew up with, who I see as a very good friend…running into things, not being able to recognize me…just struggling,” he added.
Duffy, now 9 years old, suffers from canine diabetes. The disease in canines is much like human diabetes. Duffy’s body cannot properly produce insulin, making it difficult for the body to process sugar. There is no cure for the disease.
His owners first suspected Duffy might have diabetes when he began peeing in the house this one of the signs of the disease.
Quickly doctors confirmed— Duffy’s blood sugar was through the roof. Which quickly lead to Duffy going blind.
His family wasn’t giving up on him that easily, they started the regimin of medications and monitored Duffy’s blood sugar levels. On one visit for his check up the vets finally gave the ok to try a procedure that could give Duffy his sight back. He would finally be able to see his humans!
“Thankfully we got his numbers steady and [doctors] said we could attempt surgery,” says May.
The procedure was successful. His family made sure the camera was rolling as Duffy’s vet peels back the bandages allowing Duffy the chance to see again.
You can see Duffy’s joy his tail doesn’t stop wagging. His owners are pretty happy too! May said he’s proud to see how far Duffy has come.
“Obviously he’s still diabetic so he still needs to receive an insulin injection twice a day but the surgery to repair his eyes was a total success and he hasn’t developed any problems or complications with his eyesight,”
Duffy’s video has gone viral and over 1.5 million people liked and shared it. Like and Share with your friends.
