Here’s Why You Should Never Scrape Off Moldy Bread And Eat The ‘Clean’ Part

Everyone has done it at some point in their lives. You go to make a sandwich or some toast, only to find that the bread has grown some mold since the last time it was used. Who among us hasn’t decided to simply scrape off the mold and keep it moving? This is a safe space, okay. You can admit it. Who wants to waste a perfectly good slice of bread because of some fuzz?

Science Insider has decided to put an end to this behavior by providing us with further background on the matter. As it turns out, this practice is much less safe than we realize. Mold is a fungus. Even when we think we have scraped it all off, it can still hang on. It is too small to be seen. Unseen fungi can cause us to experience a number of difficulties.

You simply cannot be sure if you have removed all of the mold because it is not visible to the naked eye. An unseen web lurks where you are unable to see it. This web contains a number of toxins that can be incredibly dangerous. The whole loaf is likely covered in spores as well. Unless you have a microscope, there is no way to tell that the bread is safe.

There are too many types of fungus to name but the ones that are commonly found on moldy bread can lead to serious health issues. Severe muscle tremors can take place and there are also diseases that we need to be aware of. That is why it is not worth the risk. Sure, throwing away a couple of dollars stinks but it sure beats putting your health in jeopardy.

Please warn your friends and loved ones. The next time you see someone about to make this mistake, let them know about all of the hidden dangers that they cannot see without a scientific degree and a microscope. After all, would you scrape mold off any other object and eat it? Probably not. Let’s all do our part and help each other out.

Those who would like to learn more about the scientific explanations are urged to check out the video below. Science Insider is here to provide you with all of the information that you need so that you do not have to make a decision that could potentially endanger your health.
