Island Inn Off The Coast Of San Francisco Looking To Hire A Caretaker For $130,000 A Year

It doesn’t matter who we are, we will often find ourselves reflecting on our ‘dream job’. This is something that may differ from one person to another and each of us probably has something in mind when we think about such an occupation. That being said, there may be some similarities from one person to another and if you would consider running a bed and breakfast on an island in historic San Pablo Bay near San Francisco, you’re in luck.

This type of job seems almost too good to be true but, it does exist. The island is known as the East Brother Light Station and is just north of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. It is a small boutique inn for tourists so they can enjoy the area year round.

Che Rodgers and Jillian Meeker were the former caretakers of the island and in but, believe it or not, they are moving on to greener pastures. That means that a new set of caretakers will be needed for the East Brother Light Station as of April. Some more information about the job was posted in a press release:

“The successful candidates will be a couple, one of whom must possess a Coast Guard commercial boat operator’s license. They will operate the five-room inn, serving both dinner and breakfast, as well as providing ferry service for guests and all other tasks from chef to maid. High-quality culinary experience and capability will be a critical qualification. The inn is open four days a week, and the island is also available for day use and special events. The new keepers will start in mid-April 2019, allowing two weeks for training.”

You can see that this is a rather niche opportunity but it does pay well. The caretakers will earn $130,000 per year, so there is likely to be quite an interest in this opportunity.

The lighthouse was built in 1874 on the 0.7 mile outpost in the San Pablo Bay. It has since been turned into a bed and breakfast and later, was added to the National Register Of Historic Places in 1971. A not-for-profit group has been caring for the island, East Brother Light Station, Inc.

For the most part, the island is a bed-and-breakfast but there may also be events, including corporate parties, weddings and conferences.

Even if you don’t have the cooking and boating skills that would make you a likely candidate for the job, the island is still worth visiting.
