There are two types of people in this world, those who enjoyed biology class and those who did not. Some of us had to take it to get the credit and we may even have taken it in college. For some, it is drudgery but for one girl, it was a total game changer.

Anya Hettich, aka @anyahettich is the one who broke the news on Twitter. It seems as if she was able to witness this craziness for herself.

In biology class, the professor was teaching a lesson on blood types. He was discussing how parents with certain blood types will likely only pass on that blood type to their children. Some combinations are possible but there are also combinations that are impossible.

One of the students knew her parents’ blood type as well as her own, so she was understandably confused. Her particular situation fell into a combination that the professor said was not possible. The student had AB blood type. Her father had blood type O and her mother was type B.

‘My prof explained that that’s impossible, that she’s confused on the blood types or something – she even drew out the different Punnett squares to show her,’ Anya said.

In case you are unfamiliar with how this works, your blood type is determined because of the A and B antigens (or lack thereof) in your red blood cells. Those who have A blood type only have the A. in a similar way, only the B antigen is found in the red blood cells of those who are blood type B. For those with AB blood type, both the A and B antigens are present. If you have type O blood, you have neither the A or B antigens.

When parents give birth to a child, one of the two A, B or O genes are passed on to their offspring. A and B are both dominant but the O is recessive. That is why an individual who receives both an O and A gene will have blood type A.

The girl talked to her professor and said that there must be something wrong because her situation didn’t make any sense. The professor said that she should go make sure of the blood types. Scientifically, it just couldn’t happen that way.

As you can imagine, a lot of tension resulted from this discussion at home. When she went to her parents, there were some secrets that came out. It seems that the mother had an affair with her husband’s stepbrother about the same time she was born.

“So technically, she’s been raised by her uncle and not her dad her entire life – her mom hid it from the both of them for 21 years,” Anya explained in her Twitter saga.

That isn’t the end of the story. Her parents are now getting a divorce since the secret was revealed.

Maybe this is a good reason why biology class should be abolished.
