When it comes to Halloween, there is an incredibly thin line between what is terrifying and what is chuckle worthy. Home Depot Canada recently crossed this line and was forced to pull some of their Halloween decorations as a result. Their “Scary Peeper Creeper” has come under fire recently. The prop was originally designed to be used for pranking purposes.
However, customers are currently filing complaints about the decorations. These complaints are rather understandable, as the decoration seems to be making a joke out of a rather serious issue. The “Scary Peeper Creeper” aims to find humor in a place that was probably better off unexplored. The decoration is clearly triggering and we do not understand why someone would think that this is a good idea.
Just imagine what it would be like to be a woman who has experienced these types of issues in the past. If you or someone you love has been victimized by a peeping tom, then the last thing that you want to see is a Halloween decoration that makes light of a very real problem. Halloween is not about bringing real fears to life.
It is about enjoying good times and laughter with family and friends. It is easy to chuckle at decorations that are based on Halloween creatures of myth. It is not as easy to laugh at decorations that are based on a real life experience. Unfortunately, woman are forced to experience the horror of peeping toms on an all too regular basis.
Shame on Home Depot Canada for believing that this decoration would be funny. It was in poor taste from the very beginning and the fact that someone green lit this idea is utterly flabbergasting. This decoration is far too lifelike to ever be humorous. Why don’t we just stick with the zombies, ghosts, goblins and witches that we are all used to?
If this story shocked and saddened you as much as it did us, then please be sure to pass it along as soon as possible. In a world where women are forced to remain on high alert at all times because of the presence of peeping toms and other creeps, we all need to come together to put a stop to this behavior. Decorations that make light of a very sensitive issue only serve to push us backwards as a collective culture.
